Sinkhole Opens in Sunrise Beach – Camden County
A big hole has recently appeared near Sunrise Beach and one road in the town is currently blocked off until MoDOT repairs it.
A sinkhole appeared next to Doctor’s Lawn on Wednesday, MoDOT says; the hole measures eight by twenty-four foot (8x24ft) and is twenty four (24) ft deep.
Route TT is currently closed due to some construction that needs to take place along this section of the highway. However, one lane of the roadway will remain closed until the project is completed. We expect to have the rest of the road reopened soon after that.
“We will continue to monitor the sinkhole to ensure our repairs this evening resolve the issue or if more measures will need to be taken,” said area engineer Danny Roeger.
According to Roeger, the sinkhole was caused by karst soils which had multiple levels of rock and clays. Soil saturation could be a contributing factor, but excessive rain on Tuesday might be responsible for its sudden appearance.
