How many sinkholes are in Florida

How Many Sinkholes Are There In Florida?

Florida is said to have more sinkholes than any other state in the USA. This is because of the geology – most of the state is underlain by limestone or evaporites – and the climate. The plentiful rainfall means there is water to dissolve the rocks, while the presence of wet/dry seasonal changes can make sinkholes more likely to collapse. Our sinkhole map database shows there are over 27,000 reported sinkhole incidences and sinkhole affected parcels across 59 counties in Florida.

Sinkhole number for each county is based on data collected from local government offices and the Department of Environmental Protection office.

Mouse over to the circle in each county to find out the number of sinkholes. Clicking on the circle will direct you to the sinkhole map.

A county without a circle meaning there is no sinkhole data in that county.

Red: More than 1,000 sinkholes

Yellow: 100 to 999 sinkholes

Black: 0 to 99 sinkholes
