Missouri Sinkhole News Brief – August 2025
St. Louis: Olive Street Sinkhole Disrupts Midtown
- On August 13, a major sinkhole opened outside Pappy’s Smokehouse in Midtown St. Louis, collapsing part of Olive Street and damaging a sewer line. The incident was triggered by a delivery truck leaving the parking lot, with the rear wheels dropping into a 15-foot-deep hole.
- The collapse caused flooding and forced the restaurant to close for several days, redirecting customers to sister locations. City crews responded with repairs and safety barricades, while the restaurant’s management urged patience from patrons.
- This event highlighted the ongoing vulnerability of St. Louis infrastructure to heavy rainfall and aging sewer systems, with similar closures and repairs occurring earlier in the year.
Kansas City: Homeowners Plead for Action on Expanding Sinkholes
- On August 4, a Kansas City homeowner appealed to the Clay County Board of Equalization for help with an expanding sinkhole and chronic flooding that have damaged her property since 2023. Despite a contract with the city for repairs, the issue remains unresolved, leaving her home at risk.
- The resident, over 61 years old, described the emotional and financial toll of repeated basement flooding and structural erosion, providing documentation and photographs to support her case. County officials acknowledged the situation and noted previous property value adjustments, but the homeowner’s concerns remain unresolved.
- The case underscores the challenges Missouri residents face in addressing property damage from sinkholes and the complexities of property valuation in affected neighborhoods.
Columbia (Boone County): Persistent Sinkhole on Business Loop 70
- In late July and August, MoDOT crews repeatedly filled and monitored a sinkhole that formed outside Ashland Auto Sales on Business Loop 70, across from Hickman High School. The sinkhole continued to settle after each repair, prompting daily checks until stabilization.
- Boone County is known for its karst geology and large sinkholes, with the largest in Missouri located in the county. The ongoing maintenance reflects the region’s persistent sinkhole challenges.
Howard County: Route 5 Sinkhole and Emergency Repairs
- On July 28, a sinkhole formed on the shoulder of Missouri Route 5 near County Road 426. The Missouri State Highway Patrol and MoDOT responded, with repairs addressing damage that extended beneath the roadway. The incident led to a temporary closure for culvert replacement and road stabilization.
