Tennessee Sinkhole News Brief – August 2025
Chattanooga: Heritage Landing/Veterans Bridge Sinkhole
- A large sinkhole opened on Heritage Landing Drive under Veterans Bridge, closing a major entrance to a Northshore neighborhood. The closure, marked by caution tape and barrels, forced hundreds of cars daily through previously quiet residential streets, raising safety concerns for children and pedestrians.
- Residents described the sinkhole as a “major issue” likely to take weeks or months to resolve. The city’s Department of Public Works is leading repairs, but the hole is estimated to be about 30 feet deep and has disrupted access to recreational areas and local businesses.
- Neighborhood associations and residents have requested additional signage and traffic calming measures to address the surge in detour traffic. The incident highlights the vulnerability of Chattanooga’s infrastructure to sudden ground collapses and the ripple effects on community life.

Jackson: Subdivision Sinkholes and Neighborhood Safety
- Several sinkholes have developed in a Jackson subdivision since April 2024, with the situation worsening by August 2025. Residents report collapsing sewer holes, a sinking fire hydrant, and ground so soft it’s unsafe to walk in some areas.
- Homeowners have contacted city officials, public works, the energy authority, developers, and the HOA, but have received little resolution. Many are frustrated by claims that the statute of limitations has expired for repairs, leaving residents to pay for recurring fixes out of pocket.
- Drone footage shows a line of sinkholes stretching across multiple properties, affecting yards, pools, and utility lines. Residents worry about the lack of accountability and the risk of further property damage and injury.
