500K gallons leaked from Newberry plant’s sinkhole
Newberry, Florida – In a recent incident, approximately 500,000 gallons of water were unexpectedly discharged from a sinkhole located at a wastewater plant, causing concern among local authorities. City Manager Mike New has estimated the repair costs to be in the range of $100,000 to $200,000, with hopes of reimbursement through insurance channels.
According to New, the anomaly was discovered by diligent on-duty crews who noticed abnormal water levels in the plant’s basin. Investigation revealed that the sinkhole formed due to the immense weight of the water, causing the liner to collapse into the soil and resulting in a rapid discharge.
Although the discharged water had undergone treatment, safety measures are being implemented, and the Florida Department of Health has intervened to assess potential environmental risks. Priority is being given to testing wells in the vicinity and evaluating possible contamination concerns.
Efforts are underway to assist affected residents, with a focus on six homes near the plant identified as a priority by health officials. In the event of water contamination, provisions will be made to distribute clean water to impacted individuals.
City authorities have swiftly initiated repair procedures, assuring residents that the sinkhole issue will be addressed promptly.
