Deerfield Beach – Broward County Sinkhole in Florida
A sinkhole formed in Deerfield Beach, Broward County on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, when a car crashed into a fire hydrant.
The incident occurred at the southeast part of the intersection of SW 10 St and Natura Blvd. Multiple sections in the area were flooded. Chuck O’Keefe from Deerfield Beach’s Department of Environmental Services said a car hit a silver BMW sedan and the driver lost control and hit the fire hydrant. The water gushing from the hydrant weakened the ground, causing a sinkhole to form and swallow half of the sedan.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Deerfield Beach District, no injuries were reported but the incident led to water and electricity interruptions as the weakened pavement caused a utility pole to droop low over Southwest 10th Street. Traffic between SW 10 St and SW 11 Way was also affected.
