Rostraver Township – Westmoreland County Sinkhole in Pennsylvania
A massive sinkhole resembling a crater formed in the parking lot of the Sunoco gas station located at Route 51 in Rostraver Township, Westmoreland County in Pennsylvania.
The hole is big enough to fit several cars inside. According to Phil Sherrand who visits the station most days, it started out as a small hole then it grew over the previous month. Despite its size, it does not affect the operations of the gas station. It is also not too close to affect the traffic situation along Route 51. However, some people who drive past the hole expressed their concern.
The cause of the sinkhole is yet to be determined, though township officials think that it is caused by a failed stormwater pipe. It could be that subsurface water leaks made the soil to give way.
The sinkhole opened along two private properties. It is not being fixed yet as there’s still a discussion on who has the responsibility to repair the sinkhole. According to the township officials, they are mediating to come up with a solution.
